Drive States

Drive reduction theory - we are motivated to reduce arousal caused by a physiological need
Example: being thirsty results in increased physiological arousal, drinking water reduces that thirst

Our basic biological drives are:
  • Feeding - maintain appropriate levels of food and water
  • Fleeing - remove ourselves from dangerous situations
  • Fighting - fighting off aggressors
  • Mating - reproduction

Practice: Biological Drive

Which of the following is not an example of a basic biological drive?
