Intrinsic & Extrinsic Motivation



Intrinsic motivation - internal motivations, like feeling satisfaction after reading a book
Extrinsic motivation - external motivations, like getting stickers for finishing a book

If someone already has intrinsic motivation for a task or behaviour, introducing extrinsic motivations can reduce the person's intrinsic motivation.

Example: If a person enjoys baking fancy cakes, so their friends start paying them for cakes, they will have less intrinsic motivation to bake fancy cakes that they aren't being paid for.
