According to achievement goal theory, success can be defined by the individual and by the situation.
There are two types of orientations:
- mastery orientation - focus on personal improvement, maximum effort, and developing/perfecting new skills
- performance orientation - focus is on beating others
Each of these two types of goals can have an approach or avoidance focus.
