Language & The Brain

Broca's Area - in the left frontal lobe. Responsible for production of coherent speech. Damage results in garbled, ungrammatical speech. Indicated by a red star in the diagram
Wernicke's Area - in the rear of the left temporal lobe. Responsible for comprehension of speech. Damage results in difficulty understanding others' speech and in producing meaningful speech (though speech produced is grammatical, it makes no sense). Indicated by an orange star in the diagram
Aphasia - disorder that results in inability to understand and/or to produce speech
Language processing is lateralized in the left hemisphere in men. In women, this hemispheric lateralization is present to a smaller degree (more balanced).
Practice: Language & The Brain

Practice: Language & The Brain
The area of the brain responsible for speech production is area, while the area of the brain responsible for speech comprehension is area.
