Types of Intelligence


Intelligence has been categorized in numerous ways

Spearman's g - generalized intelligence. If you're good at one thing, you will be good at others. Performance on a task is a combination of g and s (specialized intelligence - skills for that task)

Crystallized intelligence - stored language, knowledge, and memories, which can be used to solve problems
Fluid intelligence - ability to reason, think quickly, etc.

Gardner's multiple intelligences - independent intellectual capacities

  • music-rhythm
  • verbal-linguistic
  • bodily-kinesthetic
  • interpersonal
  • intrapersonal
  • naturalistic





Carroll's Strata of Intelligence - intelligence is organized into hierarchical categories, from most basic abilities (Stratum 1) to general intelligence/G (Stratum 3)














Emotional intelligence - set of skills involved in recognizing and understanding emotions in yourself and others as well as emotional regulation and expression
