Sources of Stress
Stressors are things, events, or situations that cause us stress
Acute stressors - short-term events that cause short-term stress (i.e. an upcoming test, being late for work, a social gathering you are dreading)
Chronic stressors - ongoing events that cause long-term stress (i.e. a chronic illness, bad relationship, financial difficulties)
Stressors can be:
- internal (i.e. low self-esteem, rigid thinking style, perfectionism) or external (i.e. boss's expectations, financial issues, relationship issues)
- Small daily hassles (i.e. overwhelmed with tasks, filing taxes, not having time for leisure) or more serious negative life events (i.e. death of a loved one, divorce, serious illness or accident, severe financial problems)
- Researchers often ask participants to fill out life event scales that ask them how many major life events they have experienced recently, whether each one was negative or positive, and how much it impacted them.
