Health-Promoting Behaviours
Health psychology is a subfield that primarily focuses on the biopsychosocial roots of illness, and how to promote health and prevent illness
Behaviours that promote health are called health-promoting/enhancing behaviours, while behaviours that promote illness are called health-compromising behaviours.
Health-promoting behaviours could include: exercise, weight control, nutritious diet, and mindfulness
Health-compromising behaviours could include: smoking, heavy alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and unsafe safe practices
Prevention (proactive) is always more valuable than intervention (reactive)!
The transtheoretical model of change identifies the stages of change that people who desire to enact more health-promoting behaviours will go through. Sometimes, people may stumble and move back a few stages!
1. Precontemplation - the problem has not yet been recognized
2. Contemplation - the problem has been recognized, the individual begins to think about change
3. Preparation - plans are made to change the behaviour
4. Action - actions are taken to change the behaviour
5. Maintenance - the behaviour changes are maintained
6. Termination - the change has permanently been made, maintenance is no longer needed
