Research Domain Criteria
One of the most common critiques of the DSM is that it focuses almost entirely on symptoms. The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project, created by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), tries to address that.
Instead of symptoms, the RDoC focuses on biological markers at the genetic, cellular, neuroscientific, and physiological levels
This allows us to better understand the biological causes of disorders and view areas of overlap between different disorders, but it also currently has a more limited clinical usefulness than the DSM-V.
