Disorders & Society
The manifestations, attitudes, and treatments of psychological disorders are heavily influenced by societal views and norms — perhaps more than other physical disorders
Mental health stigma can lead to negative beliefs about mental illnesses, can isolate those living with mental illness, and make accessing treatment more difficult or daunting
Starting in the 1950s, the deinstitutionalization movement led to a push to replace psychiatric facilities with community-based treatment centres as the primary focus of mental healthcare
Two factors that motivated this were:
1. The advent of psychiatric medications
2. A desire for more compassionate care after many decades of mistreatment at psychiatric facilities
Gradually, many psychiatric hospitals were shut down and patients hospitalizations dropped
However, decreases in funding for community-based treatment centres over decades has led to a repeating cycle of hospitalizations and releases back into the community for those living with severe disorders
