If you are a high school student, chances are you joined a club or know many people who are involved in a club. A club is simply a group of people with a common interest participating in relevant activities.
Of course, they have to be registered with the school to officially become clubs (there are also clubs you can join outside of your school).
Clubs are an essential extracurricular activity in your high school experience. They help you understand who you are as a person, what your career interests are, and discover your passion and hobbies which can last a lifetime.
At the same time, you can actually build up practical skills and experience depending on which club you join. The skills and experiences you build can impact your college applications as well.
From Key clubs to math clubs, there can be hundreds of clubs with different purposes and interests. This list serves as a reference to give you an idea of what clubs are there in a high school.

Key Club is an international service organization for high school students. Founded in 1925, Key Club has over 200,000+ members and operates worldwide. According to their website, their core values are “Leadership, Character building, Caring, Inclusiveness”.
Key Club emphasizes supporting children in need. So any relevant projects that support this either locally or internationally are their primary focus.
The National Beta Club is an organization for students starting from 4th grade to 12th grade. Its purpose is “to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, leadership, and service among elementary school and secondary school students”.
Each year, Beta holds conventions across many states in the US. Members of the Beta Club compete in activities ranging from academic contests to quiz bowls to talent competitions.
Pep Club
The main purpose of the Pep club is to promote school spirit by attending, cheering at, and promoting athletics events at the school. The mission of Pep Club is to promote sportsmanship. The first pep club was established at Princeton University in the 1870s.
4-H Club is a network of youth organizations with the mission of “engaging youth to reach their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development” based in the United States. The name 4-H came from the organization’s original motto: “head, heart, hands, and health”.
4-H focuses on providing practical experience to youth by offering the opportunity for youth to tackle social issues such as inequities in healthcare and generally advocating for issues around equity and inclusion.
Interact Club is a service club organization under Rotary International. It is made for youth ages 12 to 18. In general, these Interact Clubs are sponsored by local Rotary clubs.
Typically, Interact Clubs organize at least two projects per year. One will help their school or community. The other will help promote international understanding.
Leo Club is a youth organization under Lions Club International. LEO also stands for Leadership, Experience, Opportunity. There are two tracks of Leo Clubs: Alpha & Omega. Alpha is for members aged 12 to 18 while Omega is for members from 18 to 30 years of age.
Formerly the Distributive Education Clubs of America, DECA is a career and technical student organization with 200,000+ members. DECA aims to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready”.
Each year, DECA hosts annual conferences allowing members to participate in workshops, network with business professionals, and compete in various events. Generally, the events fall into six different categories: Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Finance, Hospitality & Tourism, and Personal Financial Literacy.
Drama Club
Drama clubs are for students who are interested in theatre production, acting, and performance arts in general. You can be learning stage terminology, acting skills, and costume design. A typical high school drama club will have an end goal of creating plays at the end of each academic year.
A Red Cross Club is an extension of a local Red Cross region. As a Red Cross Club member, you will receive training and get involved in the activities that the Red Cross delivers to your local community. Examples include blood drives and disaster preparedness education.
Debate Club
Debate club is a chance for students to improve their ability to communicate confidently while thinking critically. If you are interested in politics and global affairs, a debate club will allow you to stay informed about these topics, while broadening your perspective as you learn to argue the pros and cons of each issue. A typical debate club will involve debate competitions.
Business Club
A business club is for students who are interested in business and entrepreneurship. Oftentimes, the goal of a business club is to build a real business and participate in business and case competitions. This is extremely beneficial since students get the chance to learn how to start a business and be able to test their ideas on the market.
Photography Club
As the name suggests, a photography club is for people interested in photography. Activities in photography clubs typically consist of learning how to take photos, how to develop films, etc. Members can also go on trips to take amazing photos and develop them in a dark room.
Coding Club
A coding club is about programming and computers that can take many shapes and forms. In one club, you can learn various computer science concepts and programming languages. In another, you can develop programming skills by building real projects. There are also many programming competitions that members can participate in.
Gaming Club
A gaming club is for people interested in video games. There are also many types of gaming clubs. There can be a gaming club for people just to hang out and play games casually, a club involved in competitive eSports, or a gaming club focused on learning and developing games.
Investing Club
Investing club deals with investing in the stock market. If you are interested in finance or just want to improve your personal financial skills, it can be a great platform for you. Sometimes to avoid actual risk in investing, members will be participating in paper training simulations that gather data from real stock markets.
Film Club
Similar to a drama club, a film club is related to a form of performance art. The typical goal of a film club is to produce a short film and eventually show it to students at the school. Members of this club will be 100% involved in every aspect of filmmaking.
Astronomy Club
An astronomy club allows students to learn and explore space. Usually, there will be workshops and guest speakers in an astronomy club. There will also be stargazing trips where members will use telescopes to observe astronomical events, for example.
Cooking Club
Whether you enjoy cooking or you want to improve your cooking skills, joining a cooking club is the right choice for you. The activities are very straightforward. You follow a recipe and cook with other members. In some variations, a cooking club focuses on healthy eating and making healthy foods.
Trivia Club
In a trivia club, members are practicing and training for a trivia competition. In the US, the most prominent trivia competition is Quiz Bowl (Canadian universities also participate in Quiz Bowl competitions), which exists in high school and college. In Canada, there is Reach for the Top, which is only for high school students.
Robotics Club
A robotics club is for people who have an interest in engineering and coding. The purpose of a robotics club is usually to participate in various competitions. For example, there are competitions such as First Robotics, RoboCup, and Vex Robotics.
