5 Essentials for Your Dorm Room

5 Essentials for Your Dorm Room

Leaving home for school is exciting. But, planning can be overwhelming!

Most first-year students are unsure of what to bring, especially given how limited space can be. That’s why we’ve listed the top 5 things to make your dorm cozy, comfortable and functional.

1. Mattress Topper

There is nothing more important than a good night’s sleep! But, getting some good shut-eye can be difficult in a dorm. That’s because most dorms have rock-hard mattresses. So, if you don’t enjoy sleeping on concrete, bring a mattress topper with you.

Mattress toppers can be found in a number of different materials (memory foam, feather beds, etc.), thicknesses, sizes, and prices. Once you’ve chosen a topper, simply place it on top of the matters and voila! Instant comfort, softness, and relaxation.

2. Shower Caddy

If you’re one of the lucky few to have a bathroom in your dorm, feel free to ignore a caddy! However, for the rest of us –trekking to the showers can be hard.

Without a shower caddy, you’ll have to juggle all of your products. But, this annoyance can be avoided by simply investing in a caddy that can keep your items organized and easy to carry.

3. Mini Fridge

Mini fridges are a life-saver for dorms! Having access to your own fridge means you can keep your own food. Otherwise, having to use a shared fridge can cause some items to ‘mysteriously’ go missing. Residency fridges are also notorious for being disgusting.

With most ending up as dumping grounds for rotting food. That’s why investing in a minifridge can keep your food safe, and free from bacteria. Access to a refrigerator also means you can stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables. Having fresh-food options also makes it easier to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

4. Storage

Dorms are small. That’s why you’ll have to be strategic with your storage options! Before moving in, think about making use of every inch of space available.

For example: invest in over-the-door hooks, command (wall) hooks, under-bed containers, collapsible bins, rolling carts, etc. This will make finding items easy and guarantee your dorm is always clean!

5. Microwave

Shared residency microwaves can be gross. After all, students hardly have time to clean! That’s why you should pack a microwave for your space. Having your own microwave means you’re in control of what is used in it and how clean it is.

A microwave can also make a number of easy, quick and simple meals (hello ramen noodles!). Meaning, you’ll save money on take-out meals and make healthier meal choices!

Ultimately, your dorm should feel like home! We recommend investing in items that make your room as comfortable, relaxing, and functional as possible.
