How to Make Your Dorm Room Feel More Like Home
If you're moving away from your family and friends, it’s completely normal to miss the feel of Home. Dorm may not be as comfortable or familiar as home, but you can always make a change! Here are some helpful tips on how you can make your dorm room feel more like home.
1. Add Cozy Touches
Depending on how big your dorm room is, there are a lot of ways to brighten up your room and make it more comfortable! Bedding is one of the most important parts of any room.
Make sure to take the time to find a good comforter that won’t make you miss your bed at home. Buying a rug for the floor is also a great way to lighten up the space.
Don’t forget to bring a favourite pillow or two to throw on the bed!
2. Use Photos to Remind You of Home

All those photos you’ve taken throughout your life are finally going to have their time to shine.
If you’re moving away from your family and friends, it’s completely normal to miss them for the first few months.
However, keeping photos of your friends and family around your room is a great way to always remember them and make you feel more at home.
3. Bring Decorations from Home
Whether it be your mother’s blanket or a giant poster supporting your province, bringing something from home will make you feel like you’re not so far away.
It’ll help get you excited for those breaks where you have a chance to see your family again and help you remember your roots.
Bringing decorations from home is also a great way to let your roommate and new friends get to know you a little better!
4. Bring Your Favourite Scents

This may be one of the last things you’re thinking about, but smells are a great way to remind you of a place or time or just give a more homey feel.
Even though most residences don’t allow you to use candles, there are many other ways to incorporate scents into your room.
You can try fragrance plugins, incense or essential oil diffusers. But, always remember to ask your roommate first in case they have allergies.
5. Perfect the Ambience
Your room will be yours for at least a year, make sure it’s one that you want to go home to! It’s a new place for you to make new memories and have new experiences so make sure you don’t feel like a visitor in your own room.
Even though it may never smell like your mom’s home cooking or have your dog’s fur all over it, it’s the first time you get to call the shots on how your room will look.
One way to improve any good room is to have good lighting. Get a good lamp or always make sure your windows are open to brighten up the space.
Twinkle lights are always a popular option to help get that cozy and Pinterest feel!
