How Students can Stay Social while Social Distancing

If you’re following the rules of quarantine, you’d know that self-isolation gets lonely. When you’re confined to your home and unable to see friends, you’ve got to improvise to fulfill your social needs.

Although we hear a lot about "Social Distancing," what people actually mean is "Physical Distancing!" Just because we're physically distancing doesn't mean we have to be socially distant to one another. Here are our tips for how you can still stay social!

1. Netflix Party

Watching tv or movies is almost always better with company. Although you can’t have a movie night at a friend’s house, there’s now a good alternative! Netflix Party App is a google chrome extension that lets you and your friends watch Netflix together with a group chat function. It’s very easy to set up but each of the participants has to have access to Netflix.

2. School Subreddits

If you don't know what Reddit is, it’s essentially a discussion website that features a massive list of online communities around specific topics. Trust us, Reddit has a community for everything from A to Z. You’d be surprised to hear that there’s probably a subreddit for whatever school you attend. There, you can chat with your peers, discuss news updates, and even just vent your frustrations. To find it, just google your school name and subreddit. It’ll most likely be the first option on the list.

3. Virtual Hangouts

We know that you probably miss your friends but social distancing doesn’t have to stop you from hanging out! Virtual hangouts via Zoom, Google Hangouts, or even Facebook Messenger and FaceTime, have surged in popularity amidst the pandemic. More than ever, people around the world are longing for human connection and they’ve taken to these apps to fill that social void. A rising upstart in this space is HouseParty, a group video app that integrates games for participants to play. If you’re looking for activities beyond just chatting, HouseParty might be right for you and your friends.

4. Virtual Events

Unfortunately, every concert, festival, and large gathering have been cancelled, and for good reason. This hasn’t stopped artists and event organizers from hosting virtual events. If you go to your favorite artist’s Instagram, you’ll likely see that they’ve live-streamed a performance recently. Eventbrite has taken this to the next level. On their website, they’re listing a ton of free virtual events ranging from music festivals to group yoga and meditation sessions. Be sure to check out their catalogue because there’s something for everyone!

5. Meet people through Discord

For those unaware, Discord is a chat app that integrates text and voice channels for easy communication. To make a comparison, it’s like Slack but for gamers. Although used mostly for online gaming, that hasn’t stopped students from setting up communities around different topics. Check out this list of Discord communities around college. These communities include homework help, making college friends, studying, and even venting about college.

The above Discord communities are especially great for if you’re struggling with the transition to online learning. If that’s the case for you, Wize is here to help. You can sign up for our new service, ‘Study Buddy,’ which is FREE until the end of the semester.

This will give you access to over 20,000 video lessons, practice questions, and example problems. You’ll also be able to ask homework questions to our expert-level profs.
