How to Deal with Being Homesick at University
Homesickness is common among students especially those who are starting their first year. It isn’t always an easy topic to talk about but it’s always good to know you’re not going through it alone.
Research from Student Housing Company showed that over a third of students experience homesickness at some point in university. Whether this is missing your parents or your friends, it is a common part of coming to university and nothing to be ashamed of.
1. Take Care of Yourself
It’s important to not let yourself get lost in your feelings when you’re feeling homesick. While this is easier said than done, it’s important to keep looking after yourself and making sure you stay healthy. Going to the gym and eating healthy can help you feel more positive and energetic which will help you feel more excited about being in a new place.
2. Call Your Family/Friends
Coming into university, there is a lot of pressure to make new friends right away. This can lead to feelings of isolation if that doesn’t happen for you right away. One of the simplest ways to help with this is to call the people you’re missing.
We’re so lucky to live in a digital age where we can talk to anyone with the click of a button. Try not to call them too much though. It’s easy to fall into habits that make you comfortable and calling home too much can make it difficult for you to go out and adjust to being away from home.
3. Bring Items that Remind You of Home
One of the biggest issues with homesickness is the constant feeling of being uncomfortable in your surroundings. Whether it's photographs of friends, stuffed animals, a special blanket or even an old sports trophy, bringing these items will help remind you of what’s important to you and the people who have supported you throughout the years.
4. Stay Busy
In your first month of university, there will be so much going on around campus before midterms roll around. Make sure to check out the sporting events, club meetings and see what’s going on. Try to get yourself into a routine to get yourself used to your new normal.
Scheduling plans will give you something to look forward to and help you build relationships. This will help you feel less homesick and before you know it, you’ll be on the phone sharing exciting stories of what you’ve been doing to your friends and family rather than missing home.
5. Give Yourself Time
Being homesick at university is completely normal. It’s important to let yourself realize that you’re going through a major transition and it is okay. Give yourself time to get used to the new people around you and the new place you’re in.
It’s never easy to move away from home when it’s all you’ve ever known. It’s important to remind yourself that everything won’t fall into place right away and these experiences take time.
6. Ask for Help
It’s easy to feel alone when you’re dealing with homesickness but more likely than not, you’re going to find other people who are feeling the exact same way. If you’re having a really tough time dealing with it, there’s no shame in looking into university resources or asking your roommates to help you deal with the transition.
