What MCAT and DAT Score Do You Need for Every Med and Dental School?
Jun 22, 2026
Last updated: June 2026. Most figures reflect the 2024 to 2025 and 2025 to 2026 admissions cycles. Cycle years vary by school; see the methodology note at the end for detail.
What does this guide cover?
This guide is a school-by-school reference for pre-med and pre-dental students comparing MCAT, DAT, GPA, and acceptance-rate data across the United States and Canada. It uses the staged admissions dataset provided for Wizeprep and reports only numbers that appear in that data. Where a school does not report a score or GPA in the staged file, the table says "not reported." A median is the middle of an enrolled or accepted class, not a cutoff. Some schools publish averages instead of medians, so the tables label those score and GPA fields as "median / reported avg" when the underlying staged field includes both kinds of published class-profile numbers. Use these numbers as a competitive midpoint, then read each school's mission, residency rules, prerequisites, and application requirements before building a final list.
How should you use MCAT, DAT, GPA, and acceptance-rate data?
The MCAT total score runs from 472 to 528. In this guide, an MCAT value near or above a school's reported class midpoint usually means your testing profile is in range for that school. It does not mean admission is likely by itself.
The DAT Academic Average is reported on a 1 to 30 scale. Where a school did not publish a verifiable class-median Academic Average on that scale, this guide shows the value as not reported rather than estimating or converting it.
GPA medians and averages help you see academic fit alongside test scores. A higher GPA can sometimes balance a slightly lower test score, while a strong MCAT or DAT can help reassure schools that your academic preparation is current and durable.
Acceptance rate is the broadest competitiveness signal. It is not a personal probability. Residency, mission fit, application timing, interview performance, prerequisites, and applicant pool composition all change the real odds for an individual student.
What MCAT score do you need for medical school?
Across the 222 named MD and DO schools in this guide, 189 have a usable MCAT total value in the staged data. The median reported MCAT total across those schools is 511, with a range from 497 to 523. That means a score around 511 is near the middle of this dataset, while the most score-intensive schools cluster in the high 510s and low 520s. Schools with reported values below 505 are still selective, but they may be more realistic targets for applicants whose strengths include state residency, mission fit, strong clinical experience, service, or upward academic trends.
The median GPA value across 210 medical schools with a usable total GPA in the staged data is 3.79. The median acceptance rate across 190 medical schools with a usable acceptance-rate value is 3.8%. Read those numbers together. A 512 MCAT and 3.8 GPA mean different things at a public in-state school, a national research school, and a mission-driven DO program.

What DAT score do you need for dental school?
Across the 79 named DDS and DMD schools in this guide, 55 have a verifiable DAT Academic Average on the 1 to 30 scale in the staged data. The median is 21, with a range from 18 to 26. A DAT Academic Average around 21 is therefore a useful competitive benchmark in this dataset, while values in the 22 to 26 range usually appear at more score-intensive dental programs.
The median GPA value across 72 dental schools with a usable total GPA in the staged data is 3.71. The median acceptance rate across 66 dental schools with a usable acceptance-rate value is 7.15%. As with medical admissions, DAT and GPA are only part of the file. Shadowing, manual dexterity exposure, service, interviews, prerequisites, and residency can all matter.

Canadian dental schools: DAT, GPA, and acceptance rate
The staged data does not contain enough verifiable 1 to 30 DAT Academic Average medians for Canadian dental schools to calculate a reliable Canadian benchmark, so those fields are shown as not reported. The DAT is scored on the same 1 to 30 scale in Canada as in the United States, but published class-median Academic Averages are not consistently available for Canadian programs in this dataset, so this guide does not state a Canadian benchmark score. Requirements and score weightings also vary widely by Canadian school, and some programs emphasize GPA, the Perceptual Ability Test, or interviews more than the Academic Average. Confirm the current Academic Average expectations and score weightings directly with each Canadian school before finalizing your list.

What if my MCAT or DAT score is below the median?
Being below a school's median does not automatically take you out of consideration.
A median means half of the reported class was at or below that point, assuming the school is reporting a true median. Your job is to decide whether the rest of your application gives the admissions committee a reason to keep reading.
Start by separating small gaps from major gaps. If your MCAT is one or two points below a school's midpoint, or your DAT Academic Average is one point below a dental school's reported average, your application may still be viable if your GPA, experiences, writing, and school fit are strong. If the gap is larger, you need a clearer strategy: apply to more realistic schools, consider a retake, strengthen recent coursework, and make sure your activities show sustained commitment rather than last-minute box checking.
For medical applicants, pay attention to CASPer and AAMC PREview where required. A strong situational judgment score will not erase a weak MCAT, but a careless result can add risk to an already borderline academic profile. For dental applicants, the DAT science and PAT sections can matter beyond the Academic Average, especially when a school emphasizes perceptual ability, hand skills, or science readiness.
A retake is worth considering when your practice scores show a realistic path to a meaningfully higher result, when your score is below the range for most of your target list, or when one subsection is clearly holding you back. A retake is less useful if you have not changed your preparation process. Schools see the full testing history, so the goal is not just another attempt. The goal is a stronger, more consistent result.
FAQ: MCAT, DAT, GPA, and admissions scores
What is a good MCAT score for medical school?
In this dataset, the median reported MCAT total across 189 MD and DO schools with usable MCAT data is 511. A good MCAT score depends on your school list, but a score around 511 is near the middle of this guide. For the most score-intensive schools, competitive reported values reach 523.
What MCAT score do I need for competitive medical schools?
The upper end of the staged medical-school data reaches 523. Schools in the high 510s and low 520s are generally the most score-intensive in this guide. For those schools, applicants usually need more than a high MCAT: research depth, clinical maturity, strong writing, and excellent recommendations also matter.
What MCAT score do I need for more accessible medical schools?
The lowest usable MCAT total value among named MD and DO schools in the staged data is 497. A lower reported median does not mean easy admission. It usually means the school weighs mission fit, residency, service, primary-care interest, or osteopathic alignment heavily alongside academic metrics.
Do medical schools have MCAT cutoffs?
Some schools use minimums or screening rules, but this guide is built around reported class score data, not official cutoff policies. If a staged row described only a threshold, cutoff, or section rule rather than a usable total class midpoint, this draft treats the MCAT median as not reported.
What is a good DAT score for dental school?
For dental schools with a verifiable DAT Academic Average on the 1 to 30 scale in the staged data, the median is 21. A DAT Academic Average around 21 is a solid benchmark in this guide. The range in the dataset runs from 18 to 26.
What DAT score do I need for competitive dental schools?
In the dental data, the highest DAT Academic Average reported is 26. Scores in the 22 to 26 range appear at the more score-intensive dental schools in this guide, but competitiveness also depends on science GPA, shadowing, service, interviews, and residency.
What GPA do I need for medical school?
Among medical schools with a usable total GPA value in the staged data, the median GPA is 3.79. Treat that as a midpoint, not a rule. A student below that GPA may still be competitive with a strong MCAT, a clear upward trend, rigorous recent coursework, and strong school fit.
What GPA do I need for dental school?
Among dental schools with a usable total GPA value in the staged data, the median GPA is 3.71. Dental schools also look closely at science preparation, DAT science scores, PAT performance, shadowing, and evidence that you understand the profession.
Is acceptance rate the same as my chance of getting in?
No. The median acceptance rate in the staged data is 3.8% for medical schools with usable rates and 7.15% for dental schools with usable rates. Your actual odds depend on residency, mission fit, timing, prerequisites, interview performance, and the strength of your full applicant pool.
Should I apply if my score is below the school average?
Yes, if the rest of your application gives the school a reason to say yes and the gap is not extreme. Build a balanced list with reach, target, and more realistic programs. If your score is below the median at nearly every school on your list, consider a retake or a broader list before submitting.
