Summary of Metabolism

Diabetes

Type I Diabetes
  • Auto-immune disease
  • Pancreatic cells which create insulin are destroyed
  • Cells can not take up sugar from blood- sugar is instead released in urine
  • Gluconeogenesis and triglycerol degredation are stimulated
  • Ketogenesis is high
  • High blood glucose levels- nerve pain, damage to blood vessels in eyes, and potentially death
  • Treatment: Patients with T1D have to inject themselves with insulin periodically
Type II Diabetes
  • Results from "insulin resistance"-> over time, pancreatic cells release lower amounts of insulin in response to food
  • Occurs more often in older, overweight, sedentary people
  • Similar symptoms to T1D
  • Treatment: weight loss, decreasing sugar intake, eating more high fiber foods, insulin injections and other medications
