Controlled vs. Automatic Processing

Automatic Processing - processing that requires little or no awareness or effort. Automatic processing is fast, but can lack creativity and result in errors.

Controlled Processing - processing that requires significant awareness and effort. Controlled processing is slow, but more creative.

When we are first learning a task, controlled processing is needed. As we get more practice, processing becomes more automatic.

Example: Learning to tie shoes vs. tying shoes as an adult

Practice: Controlled vs. Automatic Processing

Putting the dishes away in your own home, where you have lots of practice, is a task that would use _______ processing, whereas putting the dishes away in your friend's house, where you are unfamiliar with the locations of things, would require ______ processing
