The Forebrain - The Cortex

The cerebrum/cortex is the part of the forebrain that we usually pay attention to when we see the brain. There are a few important characteristics of the cerebrum:
  • It is divided into two hemispheres (left and right). The two hemispheres are connected and communicate through a structure called the corpus callosum.
  • It is divided into several different lobes.

Occipital Lobe - primary visual cortex.

Parietal Lobe - primary somatosensory cortex, spatial relationships, object recognition.

Temporal Lobe - primary auditory cortex, Wernicke's area (language comprehension).

Frontal Lobe - prefrontal cortex (reasoning, decision making, judgment, etc.), primary motor cortex, Broca's area (language production).

Wize Tip
Here are a few tips to remember Wernicke's and Broca's areas:
1. Wernicke's area is about what someone else said
2. Broca's area is related to babbling - making sounds yourself
3. Wernicke's area is about understanding what others say and it's in the temporal lobe - where you process sound
