Parenting Styles

There are two key dimensions of parenting behaviour:
- Warmth vs. hostility
- Restrictiveness vs. permissiveness

Combined, these two dimensions produce 4 parenting styles:
- Authoritative - clear rules with consistent enforcement, reward with warmth/affection. High expectations, support, caring. Associated with best outcomes
- Authoritarian - cold, non-responsive, or rejecting. Strict rules, but may be unpredictible or not understood by children. Children tend to have lower self-esteem and perform poorly in school
- Indulgent - warm and caring, but lacking in discipline. Children tend to be self-centered and immature
- Neglectful - lack warmth and discipline. Children likely to have insecure attachment, lack achievement motivation, be impulsive and/or aggressive. Associated with worst outcomes

Annie is learning to use a open-ended cup to drink her milk. She carefully uses two hands, just like her parents taught her, however her hand slips and she drops the cup of milk all over the floor. Her father immediately screams at her "you stupid child" and demands that she clean up her mess. Her mother runs over to Annie and hugs her, calms her down, and tells her it was just an accident, while getting Annie some paper towel and asking her to help clean up her mess. Which parenting style is displayed by Annie's father and which is displayed by her mother?
