Self-Concept & Self-Esteem
Self-Concept - how we perceive and think about ourselves (emerged from Carl Rogers' Self Theory)
- Starts developing during childhood, as we become able to distinguish between ourselves and the environment
- Things that do not line up with our self-concept (i.e. feedback from others, life outcomes, etc.) may cause stress and anxiety
Self-Esteem - how we feel about ourselves
- Can be positive (feeling confident about our ability to make friends) or negative (feeling shame about our academic abilities after a low test grade)
Self-concept is how we think about ourselves, while self-esteem is how we feel about ourselves
