Relationships
Since our self-concept and identities are strongly shaped by the environment and people around us, our relationships also play a large role in influencing how we perceive ourselves!
The Looking-Glass Self is the idea that we determine our self-concept by thinking about how others perceive us.
However, this is a mutual relationship. Our identity and self-concept also shape the types of people we choose to associate and spend time with.
We may fulfill different identity roles in formal relationships (i.e. coworkers, employers, classmates) versus informal relationships (i.e. friends, family, romantic partners).
