Individualistic vs. Collectivistic Cultures

How we perceive ourselves and our identities is also affected by the culture we live in

Some countries are said to have individualistic cultures that emphasize individual achievements and independence (North America, Europe, Australia)

Other countries are said to have collectivistic cultures that emphasize group cohesion, harmony, and progress (Asia, South America. Africa)

In individualistic cultures, people's identities are largely defined by personal achievements and values
  • Example: "I am smart", "I am patient", "I am loyal"

Whereas in collectivistic cultures, identities are mostly defined by social ties and relationships.
  • Example: "I am a daughter", "I am a husband", "I am a university student"
