How Students Can Improve Focus To Effectively Learn Online
With the switch to online learning, many students are finding themselves unable to stay focused and productive. Just know that you're not alone!
You might be distracted by that notification pinging you on your phone, interruptions from family members, or the endless scroll of Tik Tok.
Whatever it is, follow these tips below to reduce distractions and focus in online school!
1. Create a Schedule and To-Do List
In order to be productive, you need to know what you're trying to accomplish! Managing your time with a schedule or calendar is a great way to stay on top of your readings, lectures, and assignments.
Set goals for each day through a to-do list and reward yourself once complete.
2. Reduce Distractions
We know this one might seem obvious, but it's highly important to do everything you can to achieve it! Move that phone into the next room, close all of those unnecessary browser tabs, and if possible find yourself a study space away from other people.
Many student-based apps work towards putting locks on your social media or turning off your notifications on your phone.
Try apps such as SelfControl or Freedom if you’re having a hard time getting rid of your online distractions! For more tips, read our blog " How to Reduce Distractions and Effectively Study Online".
3. Exercise
Working out is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve your focus in your online lectures.
Exercise instantly boosts dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels which impact focus and attention.
So be sure to schedule in time to get outside or do that online workout video. If you're in need of some ideas, check out this blog.
4. Drink Caffeine
Drinks such as coffee and tea actually play a role in enhancing alertness and concentration. According to dietitian Andy De Santis, all it takes is a 75mg serving of a caffeinated beverage for a person to experience the benefits.
So treat yourself to that morning coffee or tea during your online lectures! For more nutrition tips to help with focus, check out our blog "Nutrition Tips to Keep You Energized and Focussed".
5. Take Breaks & Eat Well
Breaks allow you to recharge and absorb information. In between online classes, take this time to catch up with friends and family or reward yourself with your favourite youtube or Netflix show. You've earned it! Another good strategy is to incorporate healthy snacks into your break. Eat a handful of nuts; have a bowl of fruit; dip into a yogurt; there are many healthy snacks that can keep you focused.
