The Best Study Spots at the University of Calgary
Hello fellow Calgarians! Or university…ans? Regardless of where you’re looking at this from, we all share some commonalities. Namely, tons and tons of work, limited time, and too many distractions. Not to mention frequent trips to MacHall for Tims.
We also all share the frustration of trying to find a good study spot that isn’t too loud, but not too quiet. Has enough lighting, definitely needs a place for charging your phone, and isn’t creepy enough that it makes you feel like you’re about to enter a horror movie. So, to save you the trouble of walking all over campus here are some of the best study spots at the university.
1. Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL)
You had to know this was coming. It’s one of the university’s busiest libraries- and for good reason too. Tons of light, charging places, and private study areas. The only issue is that it fills up quick during midterm season, so be sure to get there early and secure your spot. And don’t be afraid to explore all six levels of the library. Just remember, the higher up you go the stricter the code of silence. And please, for the love of everything keep your hot foods away from the top three floors. The food court is conveniently located one minute away, take it there.
2. Education Block, Third Floor
One of my personal favorites, the Doucette library on the third floor has all the quietness and none of the rush of TFDL. Though significantly smaller, the library has plenty of tables for you to spread your work out on. It does tend to get a little warm in there though, so you might want to rethink that sweater if you’re planning on spending the day. There are a few coveted spots with nearby charging outlets, otherwise, you’re going power free. As a bonus, there are areas outside the library too that offer tables and study spots.
3. The Women’s Resource Center, Fourth Floor MacHall
The center is cozy and private, perfect for if you need a place to study or need a break from the books. They offer two private rooms for first come first serve. Be sure to ask about it when you get there though, as the centre also offers peer support and priority goes to them. They have a small quiet library if you want to study there, or just grab one of the comfy armchairs and settle in. There aren’t many charging outlets here, but on the bright side they’re super welcoming!
4. Schulich School of Engineering
Don’t be intimidated by the engineering kids, this really is a great building to study at. It absolutely helps that it’s a fairly new place and the study spaces really reflect that. Lots of places to sit, tons of charging outlets and natural light. It’s not exactly super quiet, but you can solve that with popping in some headphones and letting your music drown it out.
And finally, here are some honorary mentions if you’re curious about where else you can go.
Honourable Mentions
