Queen's Best Study Spots

With the exam season being upon us and stress dancing across the faces of every university student on campus, it’s important to have a few quiet spots to take refuge from the chaos.

Although Queen’s has some of the most beautiful libraries, here are a few places to sip a coffee and get some work done that are a little more low-key.

1. Cogro - Second Floor of the ARC

Vibe: Comfortable & Accessible

Appeal: This is the definitive study staple for every Queen’s student. There are a bunch of tables and couches on the second floor to sit at, but it’s usually pretty packed.

If you go to the third floor of the ARC, there are a number of other couches and seats that are just as cute, comfortable, and it’s never as crowded!

2. Isabel Bader Center for Performing Arts

Vibe: Contemporary, Aesthetically Pleasing, Isolated

Appeal: The Isabel may be the most gorgeous building on Campus, and it’s open to all students regardless of their involvement in drama or music.

The walls are glass, and it overlooks the water which makes for a beautiful view while studying. Just don’t get too distracted taking selfies with all of the natural light.

3. Study Rooms in Residence

Vibe: Quiet & Productive

Appeal: Residence life can be overwhelming, mainly because there are people around all the time. Even for me, a complete extrovert, I need time to decompress and be on my own.

All residences have study rooms that are most commonly located on the first floor, and a lot of residents don’t take advantage of them! Because of this, the space is usually quiet, peaceful, and provides a perfect escape from all the noise.

4. The Fireplace Room - Stauffer Library

Vibe: Cozy, Dimly Lit, Quiet

Appeal: It took me weeks before I realized there is a beautiful, isolated room in Stauffer that is closed off from the rest of the actual library.

On the second floor, there is a beautiful, dimly lit room complete with three fireplaces and a beautiful view. It takes a little bit of searching to find, but it’s definitely worth checking out!

5. Balzacs - 251 Princess Street

Vibe: Hipster, Buzzing, Vibey

Appeal: Crave and Balzac’s are arguably the two most popular coffee shops in Downtown Kingston, but Balzacs always has a little less traffic during midterm season.

With great coffee, tea, and baked goods, you’ll fall in love with the aesthetic of the shop along with the drinks. If you work better with a little bit of noise in the background, this spot is definitely for you.
