University of Guelph Best Study Spots
With exam season approaching on what seems to be an increasingly packed campus, you might be wondering where you should even bother trying to find a spot to study this semester. After spending 7 years on the University of Guelph campus, I’ve selected my top 6 favourite spots that never let me down.
1. The Library
We’ll start with the most classic of classic study spots: the library. The first floor has great vibes if you’re doing group work (and can find a seat!), but my favourites were the 2nd floor and 5th floor (sorry, 3rd and 4th floors, I’m still not quite sure what you have to offer).
If you can snatch up one of the black tables right when you get off the elevators on the 5th floor, you can rest assured knowing you probably have the biggest table and most window space of anyone in the whole building.
2. The Bullring
The Bullring has been a beloved spot on the UofG campus for over 100 years, starting off as an actual cattle ring. Now a cozy, comfy cafe complete with a full food and drink menu, it might just be the hardest place on campus to find a seat.
I always found success by making my move right around 3:15 pm - not quite lunchtime, not quite a dinnertime, 2:30 pm classes haven’t been released yet, and students are starting to head out to their 3:30 pm classes.
3. Johnston Green, if it’s unusually warm
If you’re lucky, at least one of your exam periods during university will be met with unseasonably warm weather. Johnston Green is the one place where you are guaranteed a seat, so take advantage and hit the books under the sun.

4. Second Cup at the corner of College and Gordon, right across from campus
This is probably your best bet if you’re looking to “get away” from life on campus, while still technically staying on campus. UofG recently took over ownership of this particular Second Cup, which means you can cozy up in this coffee shop while still using your student card to grab a latte.
5. Balzacs at the corner of Waterloo and Gordon, on your way downtown
With beautiful, simple decor and even more beautiful lattes (Have you tried their golden latte yet?), a quick trip down Gordon street will almost have you feeling like you’ve ventured all the way to Europe. At just a 20 minute walk down the Gordon hill, you would be cashing in on a day’s worth of exercise, too, which is oh so important to remember during exam time.
6. University Centre (UC) after dinner
We’ll end with what was my personal favourite study spot to go for a quick 2-hour study session from 7 pm to 9 pm: a table by the giant windows in the University Centre. With many students off to their 7 pm classes and Starbucks still open for business until 9 pm, it’s the perfect spot to people-watch while still feeling like there’s life beyond studying.
