What is the Government Doing to Help Canadian Students Post Covid-19?
Canadian Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)
The government of Canada has put into effect an emergency plan to help students and recent graduates during and post Covid. The CESB helps those who are unable to find work, unable to work, have a different Covid related reason, or make less than $1000 a month.
The benefit gives $1,250 per month for eligible students or recent graduates. Or $2,000 per month for eligible students or recent graduates with dependents or disabilities.
The CESB will be available May to August 2020.
With many provinces slowly pulling back on restrictions but no clear end to Covid in sight, at least for the next few months, whether that is during or post-Covid, there’s the CESB.
Canada Student Service Grant
The Student Service Grant is for students to gain work experience and acquire skills during and following the pandemic. For students who contribute to national services and serve the community, the CSSG will grant up to $5000. This goes directly to your education in the fall. Students can earn between $1,000 and $5,000, depending on the number of hours completed. For every 100 hours worked, a student is eligible for $1,000, which means someone must volunteer 500 hours to receive the full grant.
This program runs until October 31, 2020.
Student Employment
With more students now more worried about the funds for their schooling and future internship the government has set up a search engine. Specifically for youth jobs, skill development and youth programs, the program is designed to help students and recent graduates find opportunities designed for them.
Student Loans Programs
Changes have been made and will continue to be made to the student loan programs, much to the relief of grads, current students, and anyone who is still paying off student debt. While national (check whether you apply in your province) student loans are put on hold until September 2020, there are more proposals that the Canadian government is hoping to pass. If these pass, then there will be more students who qualify for support and be eligible for larger amounts.
- Doubling the Canada Student Grants for 2020-2021: Full-time students will be eligible for up to $6,000. Part-time students could get up to $3,600.
- The Canada Student Grants for Students with Permanent Disabilities and Students with Dependents would double.
- More students overall would be eligible for financial assistance as they are trying to remove the contributions of student’s and spouses for the 2020-2021 year.
- Bring the maximum weekly amount provided to students from $210 to $350 for the 2020-2021 year.
International Students
If you are international students the government is putting into place guidelines to help fund your schooling in Canada. The restriction of maximum 20 hours of work a week while classes are in session is being removed, as long as they are working an essential service or function. Essential service or function is specified as health care, critical infrastructure, or the supply of foods or other critical goods.
This change will be in effect until August 31, 2020.
