Buffers

  • A buffer is a solution consisting of either a weak acid or a weak base that can resist pH changes upon the addition of acidic or basic compounds

  • The pKa and Ka of a buffer tells you the range it preserves ( XX x 10-x M)
pH=pKa+log[acid][base]pH=pK_a+\log\frac{\left[acid\right]}{\left[base\right]}
  • Biological systems tend to buffer around pH 7
  • The blood is buffered by bicarbonate
  • CO2 lowers pH and HCO3- increases it
